I remember my first attempt to quit smoking. It was so hard to even just make that decision and stick to it. I would set my date for Friday and by Thursday night I was changing it to the following Friday and then it would be Friday and I would say tomorrow.
This was a cycle that continued until I finally had a quit plan in place. I tried the patch, Zyban, Nicorette Gum and failed at all attempts because I was not getting over my addiction and really didn't have a plan. Using quit aides was not a plan, it was a bandaid. So, I gave up my quit. Continued to smoke knowing that with my health issues ( rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disk disease) I was making my symptoms worse as each year of smoking went by. Never mind the cancer and heart attack risks on top of it all.
I finally decided it was time to work on becoming a healthier person. I ordered a workout program called Insanity. Wow, it was really hard and I was not able to breath while doing the program so, that is when I said enough is enough. I quit smoking cold turkey the following day, got up did my workout and had my last cigarette at 4 p.m. I knew that within 72 hours all nicotine was out of my system. The count down began.
Within a few days of doing my Insanity program and not smoking I could see the difference in how much easier I could breath. My sense of smell started to return quite quickly and I had more energy than I've had in a long time. By combining Fitness in with my quit I was able to maintain my weight ( actually lose some and tone) build my self confidence and improve my cardiovascular health all at the same time. When active while quitting, it helps to flush toxins out of your system, gets your heart pumping, blood flowing and made me drink a lot more water. It helped having something to focus on- instead of dwelling on that last cigarette, I was able to look forward to how much farther I could push tomorrows workout.
Looking back at all my failed attempts of quitting, I now know where I went wrong. It's important to have a plan of action, a support group and take the time for you to heal.
I would love to share more of my quit journey to help you quit smoking and regain the healthy lifestyle you so deserve.
